New Necro
I have been a warrior for the past year...but now i am starting a new character... a necromancer....can anyone steer me in the right path of becoming a necromancer? I need to choose one secondary (preferablly something that will balance), and think of a build for PvE and another for PvP.

Necromancers, IMO, function the most without a secondary profession.
Blood Magic is for Damage, Curses is for Hexes. Take your pick. Or combine them.

Death magic is for MM and Tainted.
You can't go wrong with any of them.

I find Mesmer or Monk as the best choice for secondary to a Necro.
Necro/Mez is a popular option for Curse necros.
Necro/Mo I find works well with either Blood or MM builds
You can function fine without any secondary as mentioned above but I personally feel it's more efficient, for the builds I use at least, to pick one or two nec tricks to function around and grab some support from my secondary. That is don't run blood dmg in a MM build, better to use /Mo to add healing support to you and your minnions.

And Putrid Explosion. And other goodies.
But yeah, I very rarely use a secondary on my Necro. And then, its almost always just Arcane Echo for SS.

Builds for a N/x are posted all over the place.
I have a N/Me myself.
I've posted many builds on this forum (all of them are in replies to questions such as yours).
Here are my builds for PvE:
My N/Me uses the following:
Curse + Domination:
SS (e)
Parasitic Bond
Cry Of Frustration
Power Spike
Shame/Shatter Enchantment
Guilt
Worstel's Worry
Rez Signet
Curse + Blood:
SS (e)
Parasitic Bond
Vampiric Gaze
Blood Renewal
Blood Ritual/Life Siphon
Mark Of Subversion
Strip Enchantment/Suffering
Rez Signet
Blood + Illusion:
Vampiric Gaze
Blood Renewal
Blood Ritual/Life Siphon
Conjure Phantasm
Phantom Pain
Migraine (e)/Ineptitude (e)
Clumsiness
Rez Signet
Death + Illusion:
Rotting Flesh
Phantom Pain
Clumsiness/Putrid Explosion
Fragility
Virulence (e)
Epidemic
Soul Feast
Rez Signet
Here is one I created off the top of my head in a response to a Health Degen build:
Virulence (e)
Blood Drinker
Plague Sending
Epidemic/Worstel's Worry
Vile Masma
Soul Barbs
Parasitic Bond
Rez Signet
The idea is:
Cast Blood Drinker, then Plague Sending, then Virulence. This will give Bleeding, Poison, Disease and Weakness. Then cast Empidemic. Cast Soul Barbs (either before BD or after Epidemic), then cast Vile Masma and Parasitic Bond. Cast PB &/or WW unrelentingly.
Anyone within range of Epidemic will be suffering from health degen of 10. Blood Drinker and PB are your only healing (other than your party's healers).
Vile Masma is a nice addition to your health degen, since it requires a condition and if Blessed Light comes into play, PB is removed and 1 condition is also removed, but Vile Masma and Bleeding will continue. With PB and WW continually being cast, Soul Barbs will stay active and PB & WW will continue to be removed, leaving VM to stay on.
As for energy management, hmm.... patients and soul reaping would be it.
Please note, Domination Magic is left at 0. Its there to trigger Soul Barbs and as a cover hex.
Hope this helps.

I'm suprised no one mentioned the N/A Assassin's Promise build in GuildWiki. That build looks to be the most promising, albeit requiring some precision timing to get it right.

If you want degen hexes Dante, I would recommend waiting for Nightfall for the new elites. ;D

Being a MM in training, I can give you a good idea about your questions.
The benefits of a MM are 10 extra party members that act as meat-shields and/or long range barragers that give your tanks and monks a breath of relief during combat. The Elite "Flesh Golem" though guarentees you a lvl26-28 minion that leaves a corpse for you to re-animate the golem (at max death magic). MM is pretty much a much-needed profession in Cantha and parts of Tyria (and possibly Elona.), and many Groups in missions try to look for a MM. You can also farm the ToPK with a Barrage/Pet group. A N/Me MM though, It can provide more defense toward yourself but Minion Maintenance is going to be a bitch since all you have access to is Blood of the Masters for healing.
Did that help out?

Oh god they are lovely in PvE. Once the first body falls, a MM becomes the biggest threat on the field.
PvP though, useless.

Rly?? I thought they were extremely useful... AB is where they thrive and due to the lack of DP, and amount of free corpses, they rly cream

Play around with the builds and play what you like based on your style. I tried to do that most times (my preference is the curse line), but would change to MM for most missions as that seemed to be the fastest way to get a group. Looking back I should have had monk as secondary for those times I played as an MM. As mentioned MM is very viable for PvE.

I discovered the Joys of Degen Necros in both AB and CM's. If you ever tire of the MM lifestyle, I recommend that build as well.
